Membership
Information [1] Classes
of Membership The Institute has four classes of membership. All members are required to agree to be bound by the Institute’s Articles of Association and Code of Conduct. ¨ Fellows Individuals who, in the opinion of the Executive Committee, are wholly or principally engaged in the profession of licensing and who have satisfied the Committee as to their academic and professional qualifications, experience and integrity. Two client references are required.
All applicants for
Fellowship are required to have qualifications of degree standard or
equivalent. Whilst it is in the
discretion of the Executive Committee to determine relevancy, an applicant
may be considered suitable if his or her qualifications are of a scientific,
marketing, technical or legal nature.
Other disciplines will be considered on merit in the context of the candidate’s
background and commercial experience.
In addition a candidate must demonstrate, if necessary under
interview, his aptitude, capability and experience in the discipline of
commercial licensing which must have been continuous for not less than three
years prior to his application. ¨ Associates Probationers who, while
not eligible for Fellow membership at the time of their application, are
engaged in the licensing profession. Applicants for Associate
membership are also required to have qualifications of degree standard or
equivalent, which are likely to be in the scientific, marketing, technical or
legal disciplines. They are not,
however, expected to have practical experience of commercial licensing. Before applying for Fellowship, Associates
should be able to demonstrate at least three years’ commercial experience,
and must submit two client references together with an original dissertation
on an aspect of licensing of the Associate’s choice. ¨ Affiliates Individuals who, as a result
of their professional or business activities, take an interest or are to some
extent involved in the development and commercialisation of intellectual
property rights and
know-how, yet who do not qualify for other classes of membership. Applicants must be able to
demonstrate a relevant need to have an affiliation with the Institute through
their professional or commercial activities.
Two references - one professional, one personal - are again required. ¨ Honorary Members Those who, in the opinion
of the Executive Committee, are worthy of such distinction as a result of
services rendered to the Institute or whose association with it will be of
benefit to the Institute. ¨
Corporate
Regulation Fellows who practise
through a company or partnership must apply for their business to be admitted
to Regulation by The Institute if their business claims to have any
connection with or accreditation by The Institute. A business admitted to Regulation must state that it is
regulated by The Institute on its letterhead and in all promotional material.
[2] Benefits of Membership ¨ Professional Recognition The Institute is the only
professional body of its kind in the English speaking world representing
independent licensing and technology transfer consultants. It has a strict Code of Conduct. Entry to membership is by election
only. Members may use the relevant
letters after their names in the course of their professional work. ¨ A Wide Range of Contacts Members enjoy access to a
wide range of contacts around the world through the Register of Members. The Register is a confidential document
for the express use of members of the Institute. It contains details of members’ principal and ancillary
services, areas of specialisation and professional experience and, as such,
provides an invaluable networking facility. ¨ New Business Opportunities The Institute regularly
receives enquiries from a variety of sources for professional assistance on
licensing and a wide range of related matters. Brief, non-confidential details are circulated to members who
are invited to respond directly. ¨ Expert Assignments The Institute is a
well-recognised source of experts for special assignments such as expert
witnesses in contested licensing matters and mediation in disputes. ¨ Opportunities for Representation The Institute regularly
facilitates requests for speakers at conferences, seminars and other training
programmes, participants for television, radio and other media events, and
judges for technology awards and invention competitions. ¨ Exchange of Ideas The IILP acts as a forum for
the exchange of experiences and ideas between members, as well as
complementary business. It also
provides access to sources of advice on an international basis. ¨ Members’ Newsletter All members receive a copy
of “Exploits”, the Institute’s newsletter to which members of all classes are
welcome to contribute. |
